5 Ways to Reduce Noise in Apartments

If you are a landlord, one of the most common complaints you will hear from your tenants involves noise. Too much noise can even result in a high tenant-turnover rate. However, there are ways to reduce noise inside the apartments and reduce the number of complaints you receive from your tenants. The following are some of the ways you can reduce both exterior noise and noise between apartments.
Choose the Right Flooring Material ? if you have several floors in your apartment building, you should be concerned not only with noise from next door or outside, but also overhead noise. There are several ways for reducing overhead noise, such as adding noise reducing underlayments, using rugs/carpets, and cork floors.
Properly Insulate the Walls ? if there are noise problems between apartments, you may fix this by adding insulation. You will have to open up the walls in order to add the insulation. However, there are also foam insulation boards available which do not require the walls to be cut open.
Install Double Pane Windows ? double pane windows are effective for reducing exterior noise. However, the downside is its expensive price. You may hang heavy fabric drapes around the windows, as a cheaper alternative.
Strategically Place Shrubbery ? shrubbery or plants have the ability to absorb noise. You can plants shrubs near windows and exterior doorways. You can also place potted plants in noisy areas inside the apartment building such as in common areas or stair landings. This is a cost effective way to reduce noise.
Quiet Hours Policy ? as a landlord, you should include a Quiet Hours Policy as part of your lease agreement with the tenant and ask all tenants living in your apartment building to sign it. The Quiet Hours Policy should state when the quiet hours are, for example, from 10:00 P.M. to 9:00 A.M., and should include examples of actions that violate the quiet hours, such as playing loud music, holding parties, etc.
Implementing the abovementioned measures will make the tenants stay in your apartment more comfortable, and can reduce the tenant turnover rate.
